CHALKUP21 is a new Art and Architecture Trail on the East Kent coast. It includes nine new structures between Capel le Ferne and Deal, all of which were installed or built this century.

CHA were commissioned to design a series of plaques that would mark these structures and work as sculptural installations in their own right. The resulting plaques are circular but with one side deflected to describe the profile of the coast that the trail follows. Each of the structures is marked along this edge so that the plaques form an abstracted, three-dimensional map, an effect exagerated by their depth which suggests the profile of the famous white cliffs along which most of the trail runs. The plaques provide both literal and symbolic information and can be seen as another layer of contemporary design offered by the trail.

The plaques are formed in bronze that will weather to a blue-ish green. They were commissioned by DAD (Dover Arts Development) and cast at the Spacer foundry in Ramsgate. As well as designing the plaques, CHA principal Charles Holland contributed a series of texts describing the individual structures and the ambitions and ideas behind the project.
