200423_The Falcons_Link view

This small project extends an existing Edwardian house located in a seaside village with a new garden sitting room. The garden room is conceived almost as a stand-alone element in its own right, square in plan and with a pyramidal roof. It offers a space for relaxing and socialising and includes built-in seating and joinery and a home cinema. It is joined to the existing house by a new link that provides a functional new entrance hallway connecting to a utility room, wc and storage areas.

The garden room is constructed from a mix of timber and blockwork and is finished in rough render. The roof is clad in natural slates with green, aluminium rainwater goods. Windows are timber with distinctive patterns formed in the mullions and transoms. The garden room connects to a new terrace and outdoor dining area. The materials and details are simple and evoke arts and crafts precedents. Views from inside the room are spectacular, looking west across the Kent Downs. A built-in window seat captures this view on the garden side.
