LOCATION PLAN

This proposal for a public sculpture is situated at the entrance to a former mining town in Derbyshire. It is part sculpture and part sign. It takes the form of a lattice structure formed from large timber sections which can be seen as either the frame of a building under construction or the remains of a building now gone.

The structure exploits its exposed position close to the top of a hillside to generate windpower via four micro-turbines. The frame is lined with strips of LED in four different colours, each powered by one of the micro-turbines. Depending on the time of day and wind speed, the sculpture can appear as a heavy timber frame or a light and ephemeral outline or various points in between.
