House with a Studio, London

This project comprises the refurbishment of a ground floor flat within a Victorian villa in south London and a new-build design studio occupying the site of an existing garage and garden structure. The flat and studio have been conceived as a complimentary pair facing each other across the garden.

The internal layout of the flat has been rationalised with non-structural bulkheads, downstands and recessed lighting details removed and internal partitions re-positioned. A stronger connection between inside and outside will be formed, through new openings and a consistent floor finish running from the kitchen out onto the patio.  A number of new specialist joinery items have been designed and materials and colours have been developed that echo the client's taste to explore an interest in pattern and decoration.

The rear elevation of the house will be finished in white render and highlighted by pale pink timber framed windows and slidings doors. In contrast, the garden studio will be clad in black, corrugated aluminium. This single storey structure incorporates a studio, bathroom, small kitchen unit and a store room. A metal trellis - painted pink to match the windows - extends over a timber deck to form an outdoor room. The trellis will form a basis for climbing plants and deflects to negotiate an existing mature tree.
