CHA were shortlisted to design a temporary and moveable art exhibition as part of the Art Explora project. This initiative seeks to bring contemporary art to communities who might normally feel excluded from visiting galleries and exhibitions. The Art Village is a travelling exhibition that is programmed to visit a number of Mediterranean towns from 2023 onwards.

CHA were invited to develop designs for the Art Village. Our proposal –which was developed in collaboration with event experts Stage One, DHA Designs  and environmental engineers Integration – offered a flexible and practical series of enclosures that also offered a distinctive and engaging character.

We took the concept of the ‘village’ as a starting point, imagining an informal cluster of small buildings, each distinct whilst clearly being of a family. Signage, lighting and colour were used to distinguish and enliven the individual elements, which were able to be arranged to form a central public space – a village green or miniature town square.

The scheme allowed us to explore methods of temporary construction and fabrication as well as the logistics and practical challenges of a moveable form of architecture.
